Due vie si separavano nel bosco ingiallito
e mi dispiacque non seguirle entrambe
ma ero un viaggiatore solo. Per un po’ mi fermai
a guardare una di esse fin dove era possibile
là dove svoltava nel folto della macchia;
alla fine presi l'altra, così come veniva,
quella che sembrava averne più diritto,
perché era erbosa e non mostrava alcun segno;
benché, in fondo, chi di là era passato
le avesse egualmente segnate entrambe,
ed entrambe quel dì egualmente stendevano
sui fili d'erba l’orma nera d'un passo.
Oh, la prima ho lasciato per un altro giorno!
Davvero, sapendo che una via porta ad un’altra,
dubitavo che mai sarei tornato indietro.
Dovrò raccontare questo con un sospiro
da qualche parte, fra molto molto tempo:
due vie si separavano in un bosco ed io...
io presi quella che era la meno battuta,
e solo questo fu ciò che fece la differenza.

The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:

And that has made all the difference.
